What To Do
Get to know Riverton
Riverton, also known as Aparima, is a charming coastal town located in the Southland region of New Zealand, about 30 kilometres west of Invercargill. It holds the distinction of being the oldest European settlement in Southland and one of the oldest in New Zealand. Riverton’s history is a tapestry woven with both Māori and European threads. The area was originally a significant Māori settlement called Aparima, drawn to the harbour and abundant seafood. European settlement began in the 1830s with the establishment of a whaling station. The town’s museum, Te Hikoi Southern Journey, beautifully showcases this dual heritage.
Nestled on the shores of the Jacobs River Estuary, Riverton boasts a stunning natural setting. The estuary, formed by the Aparima and Pourakino rivers, creates a haven for diverse birdlife and offers scenic walking trails. The town also provides easy access to beautiful beaches, including Taramea Bay for safe swimming and Mitchell’s Bay for surfing.
Riverton has a thriving arts community. The town’s main street is dotted with galleries and studios showcasing the works of local artists. The Riverton Arts Centre is a hub for creative expression, hosting exhibitions and workshops.
Riverton is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Surfing, fishing, kayaking, and hiking are just a few of the activities you can enjoy. The nearby Te Wai Koraki Wetland Reserve offers a peaceful escape into nature, while the scenic drive along the Southern Scenic Route provides breathtaking coastal views.
